Madame Shugah
Pasadena, CA
Serving up desserts that both vegan and non-vegan customers rave about.
Madame Shugah serves up desserts that both her vegan and non-vegan customers rave about. If you’ve ever ventured into a grocery store in search of a vegan, gluten or soy-free treat that was also mouth-wateringly delicious… then you’ve probably been disappointed more than a time or two!
Her mom was a dessert queen in her own right so, from a young age, Madam Shugah learned how to bake and have a blast with her. When she passed away in 2009, Madam Sugah continued baking as a way to maintain her connection to her. Years later when she became gluten-free, the baked goods she found all the options in the grocery stores were either overpriced or subpar. She decided to take matters into her own hands and made a vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free chocolate chip cookie. Her friends sure enjoyed it, so she started as Shugah Mama! A bit later, she decided to add a little more fun into the mix (and needed a trademark) so she changed it to Madame! It all started with just this one cookie!
For over a decade, Madame Shugah has set out on this incredible journey of food, business, success, failure, and everything in between!
"Heather Kuklin launched Madame Shugah nine years ago out of her Silver Lake garage to make vegan, gluten-free and soy-free ice cream sandwiches that tasted as good as their traditional counterparts." - LA Business Journal
